FEFU will conduct R&D works for Rosneft to define ice strength properties

12 September 2018

Rosneft and Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) signed R&D contract in the framework of the IV East Economic Forum to define ice strength properties for designing of marine hydro technical facilities.

The document includes elaboration of methodology guidelines for considering strength properties for different types of flat ice and correct consideration of ice load.  Under the R&D program it is planned to conduct constant monitoring and comparison of marine ice properties at four sites, located in the Arctic and the seas of the Pacific Ocean basin.  The collected data will make it possible to specify the parameters of the ice regime and ice load on the facilities located in the continental offshore of the freezing seas for effective and safe hydrocarbons production.

The obtained data will be analyzed by the specialists from Arctic Scientific Center, which is part of the Company R&D complex.

Entering into the Agreement is yet another stage for the Company in developing the program for scientific research expeditions  to study the Arctic and Far Eastern shelf.

For reference:

For a number of years Rosneft and FEFU implement a number of innovative projects for offshore fields development.

Far Eastern Federal University has substantial competences for marine hydro technical construction in the freezing seas due to the scientific school of marine hydro technical construction and marine ice technique, which was formed in the 1980-s.  FEFU specialists elaborated mathematics models for ice load forming process and impact on the engineering facilities of the continental offshore, which were conducted based on field and semi-field experimental studies.

Far Eastern school is well known in Russia and abroad. FEFU accumulated a vast experience of scientific support for the construction in the Pacific Ocean basin.

FEFU specialists for the first time developed recommendations to protect the supporting structures of offshore Berkut platform (Arkutun-Dagi field) in the Sea of Okhotsk, which were completely implemented.

At present FEFU scientific school team for ice cover studies and its impact on the engineering facilities is actively involved in the solution of the ice challenges in the course of oil and gas fields development in the Arctic.  Large scope of scientific developments regarding Arctic offshore oil and gas fields infrastructure setup were done based on Rosneft orders.
